The Serbian Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance is a professional organisation founded to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The Society was established in 2019 and is the first organisation of its kind in this part of Europe. Its founder and honorary president is Prof. Dr Marija Zdravković, who, together with a group of enthusiasts, founded the Society with the vision and mission of informing the professional and scientific medical community in a clear, scientific and contemporary manner about the possibilities of cardiac magnetic resonance – all with the aim of achieving faster and more accurate diagnoses and the most optimal treatment for patients. The organisation works closely with domestic institutions and regularly conducts educational programmes and congresses in cooperation with the Serbian Society of Radiology and the Cardiology Society of Serbia. The Society promotes the importance of professional collaboration between cardiologists and radiologists and the team-based reading of findings in the form of a consilium opinion. The Society is also engaged in the education of medical doctors – cardiologists, internists and paediatricians – as well as radiographers, medical technicians and all healthcare professionals who, in their work with patients, encounter conditions where timely referral to cardiac magnetic resonance is essential.
The current president of the Society is Dr Maja Popović, a radiologist and one of the pioneers of cardiac magnetic resonance in Serbia, who acquired her knowledge of cardiovascular magnetic resonance under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Marija Zdravković.

Prof. Dr Marija Zdravković, founder of the Society and its first and now honorary president, began her training in cardiovascular magnetic resonance in 2014 during her study visit to the Heart Centre Leipzig (Herzzentrum Leipzig) in Germany, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Matthias Gutberlet. At that time, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) was beginning to organise certified training programmes in cardiac magnetic resonance, and in 2016 she completed the ESC course at the Heart House in Sophia Antipolis, the ESC’s education centre. In 2016 Prof. Zdravković also attended training at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago under the mentorship of Prof. Dr James Carr, and in 2017 she trained with Prof. Dr Philip Haaf in the cardiovascular magnetic resonance laboratory of the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland.
Prof. Zdravković received specialised training in implementing stress testing for ischaemia during cardiac magnetic resonance at the Charité hospital in Berlin, Germany, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Sebastian Kelle in 2018, and in 2019 the first adenosine stress test was performed.
The Society also enjoys an outstanding collaboration with Prof. Dr Robert Manka, Director of the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Centre at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, who mentored Prof. Zdravković during her two-year post-doctoral training in Zurich from 2017 to 2019, supported by a fellowship from the Heart Failure Association and the ESC, as well as with Prof. Dr Jadranka Stojanovska, Chair of the Scientific Programme of the World Congress on Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, held in London, United Kingdom, in 2025.
